Grenaa Gymnasium provides IB students with the opportunity of having a support family contact.

The purpose of the support family contact is to strengthen the relationship between Danish and international students at the school. We find it important to help our international students adapt to the Danish school system and the Danish culture. A support family contact is also relevant to some of the Danish-speaking students who have spent a great part of their lives abroad and don't know the Danish school system very well. 

The arrangement is based on voluntary effort. The families who have volunteered as support family contacts in the local area are invited to an introductory meeting at the beginning of the school year. Here they meet their 'guest student' and together they decide on four specific dates for visits during September and October.

During these four visits the student is typically:

• Introduced to the members of the family.
• Given a tour of Grenaa and the local area.
• Given the opportunity to talk to the family about what it means to go to school in Denmark. The Danish school system differs from that of many other countries by demanding a higher degree of responsibility and self-discipline when it comes to school work.
• Introduced to Danish leisure culture in general and, more specifically, local leisure centres. Families may take students to places where they do sports themselves or otherwise inform them about sports options in the town of Grenaa and its surrounding areas.

All signed-up students and host families will receive invitation to an introduction afternoon on Wednesday 22nd August 4-5 pm at the Boarding School

Since the arrangement is based on voluntary effort, students who sign up are not guaranteed a family. If there are not enough families to cover the number of students in question, it is estimated which students benefit most from the arrangement, and families are then distributed accordingly.
